In an analysis published today by the CDC, the rotavirus vaccine does not appear to be associated with any increase in the rate of intussusception, a form of intestinal obstruction, in infants. Though there have been some cases reported in infants after receiving the vaccine, the number of cases is not any higher than would be expected naturally. The vaccine is under close scrutiny because a different rotavirus vaccine years ago may have caused this kind of obstruction. To date, the current vaccine seems safe and effective and does not seem to cause intussusception. The vaccine will continue to be observed for this effect.
