Several cases of breast enlargement (gynecomastia) in boys before puberty were recently reported that were linked to healing balm, hair styling gel, soap and lotion. Benign breast enlargement is normal in boys during puberty but is abnormal before. In each of these cases, the condition was linked to products containing lavender oil, tea tree oil, or both. The condition resolved one use of the products stopped. The oils are absorbed through the skin and disrupt normal endocrine pathways. The effect likely happens in girls as well.
These oils are sold over the counter in their pure form and are being used in an increasing number of lotions, soaps and shampoos. Parents should be cautioned about the use of products containing these oils.
