Canada is allowing Adderall XR back on the market after it had been suspended on February 9, 2005 due to concerns about cardiac deaths in teenagers in the United States who were using Adderall and Adderall XR. The labeling has been revised to include warnings about using the drug in patients with heart abnormalities, and safety monitoring will be done. In the US, the drug was never suspended, though a warning was issued about the possible risk of cardiac events in children taking the drug. A similar warning was issued in the US by the FDA in September 2004.
As mentioned in our previous story on this topic, this highlights the fact that no drug is completely safe nor are all the effects of any drug completely known. Any person taking any medication needs to carefully weigh the potential benefits and risks of the medication and should be carefully monitored once taking it.
