In response to the recent controversial statement (and correction) from the American Heart Association, which recommended all patients receive a screening ECG prior to starting stimulant medication for ADD/ADHD, the AAP has now issued a position statement.
The AAP statement, which has been approved by other specialty societies as well, reiterates its previous position, that children need careful cardiovascular screening; however, an ECG is not necessary unless there is a concern about heart disease.
Our recommendations have not changed. All patients on medication for ADD/ADHD must have an annual physical exam and also be seen every 3-6 months while on medication. All patients must complete a cardiovascular screening form, and any patient with symptoms or history suggestive of heart disease will be referred to a pediatric cardiologist.
An ECG is not currently recommended for all patients with ADD/ADHD. However, if you, as a parent, wish for your child to have an ECG, we would be happy to arrange this referral for you.
