Pemoline (Cylert and generics) is a stimulant medication used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD). There have been known risks of liver damage and failure from this drug for years. In 1999, the FDA issued a strong warning and restrictive labeling for pemoline due to these risks, and the use of the drug dropped by 80%. In May of 2005, the maker of the brand name product withdrew the drug from the market. Now the FDA has decided that the risks of the drug outweigh the benefits, particularly with other ADD treatments available, and generic pemoline is also being withdrawn from the market. The drug is still available until all supplies have been exhausted. Anyone taking this medication should be transitioned to another medication as soon as possible.
