The FDA has issued a warning about serious reactions to common, over-the-counter acne medications. (These medications are also in most of the common prescription acne medications). Some people may have serious or life-threatening reactions to benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, including wheezing, difficulty breathing, and facial swelling. It is unclear if the reactions are due to the active drugs or to other chemicals in the products. People with itching or hives when using these products should stop using them and speak with their doctor. If any serious symptoms occur, such as wheezing or mouth swelling, seek immediate medical attention.
The FDA wants patients who use these medications to be aware of the possible serious reactions. They also recommend testing any new acne medication with a couple of small spot applications for 2-3 days before using it as directed.
